ABOUT ABOUT

(Various Directors)

Nichelle Nichols broke through to another dimension when her character Lt. Uhura graced the flight deck of the USS Enterprise in the short-lived, cult series "Star Trek." She taught American audiences what was possible for the Black woman in speculative fiction. Light years later, Black women are reclaiming their rightful throne in speculative fiction: Michonne on "The Walking Dead," Zoe Saldana in the "Star Trek" reboot, Gina Torres in numerous video games, "Hannibal" and "Firefly", Zoe Kravitz in "Mad Max: Fury Road" and many others.

But is it enough to declare a revolution?

ASTRONOMMO introduces you to emerging films that rewrite the narrative of Black women in speculative fiction on film. Watch shorts and features in animation, horror, science fiction, and fantasy featuring or directed by women of color.

Series of films featuring Black women filmmakers and actors in speculative fiction.
